 Bread in the Wilderness
Spiritual Famine or Gospel Feast?

Christians know that we often live in the wilderness – a place of difficulty and even danger. During this Lenten season, as we remember the story of God’s faithfulness, and especially the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, we are given strength for life’s journey, “bread” to sustain us through the wilderness and beyond.

Eight Lessons will be introduced with a sermon for group and individual reflection, beginning February 21 and ending April 11.

Themes: February:

Feb. 21, “Bread that Perishes” The Lesson of the Hungry Heart.

Feb. 28, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” The Lesson of the Sabbath.

Call the office (332-2083) for more information.

"Acres of Giving:
Harvest an Acre, Feed the People."

Faith United Methodist Church is challenging our members to donate the equivalent of 20 acre of soybeans or corn in the coming year. We challenge farmers to donate one acre if you are a farm family to our new “acres of giving” program. If you are not a farmer, we challenge you to donate the cost of producing an acre and you can be matched with a farmer – for your own acre. Our plans are to have this be an educational opportunity for our church family too. We will have a Spring Blessing Service, and Fall Harvest Service and Meal out at one of our producer’s farm, where young and old alike can see the blessings of God through the farmer’s stewardship of the land.   Your gift can be utilized in many ways, but we suggest one of the following.

I want my gift to go to:

Missions Building RepairsGeneral Church Expenses      Other :_________

I would like to donate cash for one Acre of Crop Production or for a percentage of the production on one acre for this project:

$50     $100     $200                    Other Amount:_________

There will be more on cost of production and informational things in the next months.

Take the challenge and make your reservation by March 30th.

FROM Pastor DAVE (Hobbs)

I hope all of you are staying warm during these cold and snowy winter days. I have just two quick things to share this month about our youth programs.

The first is that we are still planning on having two “Youth Mission” weekends in May (Saturday, May 1st and 22nd) where our youth and adult volunteers will outreach through mission projects in our communities. But before we can have these projects, we must have people who have project needs. Is this you? I am asking that you look around and see whom we might reach out to for some ‘mission’ projects. We want people to feel ok in asking us for some help with their odd project needs. This could be for an elderly person who doesn’t have the ability to get the job done on their own, or even someone else, who has many things going on in their life at this time, that doesn’t allow them to work on a much needed house project. My prayer is that our Church family will reach out and check with some folks who might have some of these needs and let me know about their needs. We have a great bunch of kids with a lot of talent and energy, and if we can focus that energy on some good local mission projects, I think everyone will benefit. So give me a call if you or someone you know is interested.

The second thing is that we are planning a ski trip coming up here in February for our youth. We will be going on a Sunday afternoon this time, which will be February 21st, 2010. My plan is to have everyone be here at the Humboldt Center at 10:45 a.m., so that we can leave at 11:00 that morning and head up to Mankato, Minnesota. We need a minimum of 15 for skiing and 10 for tubing, so I am encouraging everyone to come who is in 7th grade or older. The church is paying for the gas and for the noon and evening meals for everyone, but the cost of skiing or tubing, or both is your cost. At the current time the cost is roughly $14 for tubing and $32 for skiing. We will stay at the Ski resort from around 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. and then we’re heading home. We should be back in Humboldt around 10 p.m. that evening. This is always a very fun trip, so please tell your friends about it and also tell any adults who would like to chaperone. If you have any questions give me a call.

Finally, to all those 8th grade confirmation students, don’t forget about our Confirmation trip on February 26th. We will be leaving from Humboldt around 8:00 a.m. and heading to Des Moines to work at Hope Ministries and we’ll also attend the Shabbat service at the local synagogue that night, being home at around 10:00 p.m. in Humboldt. Again, thanks to each and every one of you for your prayers and thoughts this New Year.

Faith UMC 8th Grade Confirmation Trip

On February 26th, 2010 (Friday), we will be leaving from the Faith UMC Humboldt Center at 8:00 a.m. to go to Des Moines for our 8th Grade Confirmation Trip. We will return that evening around 10 p.m. after working during the day at a homeless shelter and also going to the local Jewish Synagogue Service. This is a required event and we look forward to seeing you on the trip. If you have any questions please give us a call at the office at 332-2419. Thanks and God Bless you!!

Faith UMC Ski Trip

Cost:  $32 for skiing, and $14 for tubing (we need minimum of 15 to go for rates). Meals/transportation provided.

Who:   Anyone who is 7th grade or older.

Deadline:   Your money and commitment needs to be into the church by Tuesday, February 16th.

CALL PASTOR DAVE IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS!!

Faith UMC Youth Mission Project Request

The youth are planning two local ‘mission project’ days in the month of May (May 1st and May 22nd ) 2010, and we are asking you to help us find some local projects to do within our local communities (Humboldt, Rutland, Bradgate, Gilmore City, Livermore). These projects must be for someone who has a need, and also a project that could be done within a day’s time. We will have some adult volunteers assisting the youth, but we’d ask that the projects be ones that could be done by youth—yard clean up, painting, and small repair jobs, etc. If you are interested, or know someone who would have a need, give me a call in the office…and thanks for your help.

©©©©©©©Could You be a Friend in Faith?©©©©©©©

Friends in Faith is the name of the bereavement ministry that serves the members and friends of Faith UMC after they have experienced the loss of a loved one through death. Friends in Faith visit the bereaved member on behalf of the church, to offer a listening ear, understanding comfort and compassionate friendship. Pat Barrick is the coordinator of this quiet, confidential ministry. Since Friends in Faith extend their care one-on-one, “behind the scenes”, their work is mostly hidden from public view. However, their visitation extends the care of the church way beyond what any number of pastors could do. We honor their ministry each year at our All Saints’ Sunday service.

Could God be calling you to join in the caring ministry of Friends in Faith? Your own experience of loss, grief and recovery may have equipped you to be a gift of caring to someone else. If you would like to explore this opportunity, call Pat Barrick at 332-5088, or speak to Pastor Jan Burnett.

Joining a Small Group

Your Small Group / Sunday School Class may wish to use this Lenten Study, “Bread in the Wilderness” to deepen your spiritual walk. God has provided a “Gospel Feast” through Jesus Christ. Will we accept the invitation

          To serve,
          To break bread,

To love,

To reach out,

To receive grace,

To experience blessing,

To bear witness?

Charles Wesley’s Hymn gives our invitation:

Come, Sinner, to the gospel feast,
Let every soul be Jesus’ guest.

Ye need not one be left behind,

For God had bid all humankind.

Please stop at the back of the sanctuary in each site to sign up for a group.

Pastor DAVE's Page

I read a story the other day about a person trying to put a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle together—one of those beautiful wall sized picture ones that can take you hours to put together. With tremendous effort the person continued on the job, and bit by bit was achieving their objective of getting it done. After many hours and many days of work the person came to the final few pieces. The excitement began to build as they saw their work slowly become a whole picture, one that looked just like the one on the box cover, but as it turned out, with much dismay the person discovered there was something missing, it was the last piece, right in the center of that beautiful picture. One piece was missing. They searched and searched, and to no avail, the piece could not be found. As the moments passed by the person decided to throw it away, and purchase another huge jigsaw puzzle. As the puzzle was about to be thrown away, a glimmer of light shone upon the newly created work of art, creating one of the most beautiful images that the person had ever seen, even without the last piece. The person realized that even though this picture wasn’t ‘perfect’ it was beautiful.

This story tells us a lot about us and about others, and about how God views all of us. We are imperfect creatures trying to be perfect. We work so hard to place that last piece into our lives to create the perfect image we would like to see. We go to church, we provide for our families, we care for the sick, we read the Word, and maybe pray often, and yet at times we realize that none of this really finishes us completely, or even at times makes us the kind of person that God would want to see in heaven. We feel like we’ve fallen short, that we just don’t quite measure up. Have you ever felt that way? Well, I think we all have at times. It is a hard thing to try to be more than you can ever be on this earth.   You see, I think this idea of perfection is pervasive in our so-called ‘religious’ society. Jesus Himself struggled with this issue too, as He welcomed the less than perfect.   It was always at those times that those more ‘perfect’ people would challenge His new ‘grace’ filled divine law. The only hope of any of us less than complete people is that God will accept us as we are through His divine grace. The point of my story is not that we don’t try to be better Christians, or work on sanctification in our lives, but that God loves you as you are, even without the final piece being in place. Too many people fall away from God because they feel they can’t meet the expectations of God, or the expectations of well intentioned Christians or Christian churches. This brings up a great responsibility to you. Are you willing to reach out to yourself with grace and forgiveness, and also to those whom we all too often judge? Jesus was keen on sharing about His loving Father, and mentioned many, many times of His Father’s mercy and forgiveness. If you are carrying your own burden today of trying to live up to certain expectations, why don’t you lay them down at Jesus’ feet today.  Take a moment to realize there can be a sense of peace and rest today in God’s loving arms, He truly doesn’t want you to feel inadequate. He wants you to know that you are loved, even in the midst of your frailties. And finally, understand that God doesn’t expect you to be perfect, He only expects you to accept forgiveness and to offer forgiveness, and with that comes a faithful life.

LET’S BE GOOD ENERGY STEWARDS!

There are many costs we cannot control in our ministry at Faith UMC, such as paper, postage, electricity, heating fuel, etc. What we all can control is how much FUEL we use. For every degree we increase there is about a 3% increase in our heating bill. By lowering 1 degree we could save $72/month – that’s $864/year. We need all of your help to NOT adjust thermostats – no higher than 68 in the winter …. And if you do raise the temperature, please lower it when you exit the room. Thanks for your help in being good stewards (it’s YOUR money, which you’ve give for ministry, right?)

It is suggested that you contribute 10% of one WEEK’s income. This would be over and above your current giving, if possible. Any amount will be appreciated! A letter and envelope will be mailed to your home the week of Feb. 14th.

The offering will be used to supplement our general fund.

                                       Thanks for your faithfulness!
